David Serisier
Garden Paintings
17 March - 2 April, 2022
David Serisier’s Garden Paintings are informed by memories of gardens travelled, lived and imagined. His verdant palette is sourced from a combination of direct experience, digital media and print documentation. Each of which, enriches perception of his personal environment: the cold climate garden of Summer Hill, Orange.
In 2014 Serisier moved his studio from an industrial inner city Sydney environment to its current garden location. The studio is now surrounded and enmeshed by perennial flowers and shaded by towering trees.
Serisier’s Garden Paintings series commenced in the depth of the Covid winter of 2021 when the deciduous trees were reduced to grey bones and the perennials were dormant. He imagined travel to unknown gardens and those previously experienced. Finding images of the Schloss Benrath garden (Benrath palace), Düsseldorf, filled with the same trees inhabiting Summer Hill, Serisier short cut the changing seasons and began to establish the foundations of his paintings. As such, he was able bring the garden paintings to fruition as his own garden woke over Spring and Summer. Here, the garden is explored through naturally occurring bichromes to evoke an intimate experience of emersion.
