Summer 2023

SUMMER

2-25 February, 2023

Liverpool Street Gallery is thrilled to present SUMMER, a group exhibition that surveys and recontextualises expressions of heat and warmth in Australia.

This show introduces the work of two new artists, Taras Kripps and Lisa Patroni, alongside more established artists - Steven Harvey, George Tjungurrayi, David Serisier, Marea Gazzard and John Olsen. The works draw colour and vitality from the specific nature of our antipodean summer, at once bleached and barren, colourful and pulsating.

Patroni’s work conjures the brilliance of a canola field, while the Tjungurrayi and Serisier invoke the heat-haze that shimmers over open ground. Kripps’ and Harvey’s muted greys, so easily associated with winter’s chill, are transmuted into summer tempest – the verdigris of Maria Gazzard’s Head, a testament to the power of rain to transform. At the end of it all, Olsen’s The Loneliness of a King-Sized Bed imagines the cloying heat of sleepless summer nights.
